Is Common Golf Knowledge Ruining Your Golf Swing?

Common Knowledge just might be hindering you from improving your swing, causing you major frustration and higher scores.

There is a lot of well meaning golf instruction in the market place today that simply will not help your game; in fact a lot of what’s out there will hinder you as you try to improve your golf.

The focus of my new site, (http://www.GolfMyths.com), is simply to identify this mis-information and to let players know, not only what the myths are, but why these myths are not true and how they do damage to your golf game.

Controversial? Probably, but I think the positives of the information I am putting out at GolfMyths.com will far outweigh any industry fall-out that I might receive from those instructors with stepped-on toes.

When David Ledbetter or any other of a host of well-meaning golf instruction gurus tells his touring professional student to “delay the rotation of the left hip”, or to “increase the width of your swing at the top”, “or to “delay the release as long as possible”, or any other “flavor of the day” type golf tips, he or she is talking with someone who is a professional, who practices hours on end, and who has an unbelievably acute feel for his or her own golf swing. This person also plays golf for a living. This is a completely different scenario than trying to teach a low, mid, or high handicap player or a beginner. These types of tips can absolutely wreak havoc on your golf swing and you can visit www.GolfMyths.com, and I’ll tell you exactly why.

Golf is a difficult game to play at the highest levels, but, having said that, it is not a complicated game to play. Most modern day instruction is hard for me to understand and I’ve been teaching the game for 20 years. Having said that, in order to excel, you have to free your mind of complicated mechanical thoughts and learn to simply swing the golf club.

Until you change the way you think about playing the game, change the fundamental way you look at golf instruction, and realize that you have to forget mechanics, you’ll never play up to your full potential as a golfer.

“Forget mechanics”, you ask, “why that’s all I think about.” I can hear your mind racing now; “Start the club back online, turn don’t sway, pull down with the left hand to start the down swing, transfer my weight to my left foot, roll my wrists at impact, head behind the ball.” YIKES! How can you even take the club back with all these mechanical thoughts you’ve picked up over the years racing through your head?”

The answer to my question is ….you can’t! You simply cannot swing the club effectively with all that garbage running through your mind, distracting you from what’s most important.

It’s sad, but absolutely true that thousands of people quit the game we all love every year, most out of sheer frustration.

If you have fallen into this trap of believing that mechanical tips, swing analysis, and pounding golf ball after golf ball on the driving range are the answers to your problems, you are destined to be frustrated forever.

Golf should be fun not frustrating and when you learn to forget mechanics and start playing the game via feel and sight, it will be fun and you’ll shoot better scores. I guarantee it!

“How do I do that”, you ask?

First you have to be able to differentiate fact from fiction and that’s what I’m going to help you do at www.GolfMyths.com.

Next, you have to forget all the theories, mechanical thoughts, and myths and focus on what is important to your game.

That’s right, I said your game, not Tiger’s, not Phil’s, not Big John’s but yours. Focus on the things that are important for you to play better. Focus on your swing path and the moment of truth..Impact. Tie swing path and impact into your target and you’re well on your way to longer, straighter shots, and lower scores.

Golf Putting Tips

Truth be told, a lot of golf players never encounter troubles when it comes to their swings. With the total golf course being huge as it is, there exists of allowance for mistakes and appropriate corrections, and the idea alone provides so much confidence for the player.

Nevertheless, it’s the putt that separates the pros from the wannabes, as many golfers say.

In fact, once a golfer is confronted with the game of putting, the once humongous area of the golf course is minimized to a few feet of green. The space between the golfer and the flag may be quite short – oh so very short – but the pressure to drive the ball to the hole will be big – of so very big indeed.

If you aim to make it big in the sport of golf, you don’t merely master your driving shot, you have to master your putting game also.

The problem that a lot golf players meet is that their putts in reality suck.

Let’s straighten things up – no pun intended.

Putts are meant travel straight. A ball that is putt is meant to go in a straight line. For this reason, pro golf players ensure that they break the ball in a pendulum-like manner. Such necessitates the usage of strong grips that restrict the twitching of the wrists. Extra wrist motions will only result in a curved shot for the ball, which isn’t really what what an ideal score would require.

Expert golf players set up their rhythm by facing the ball, spreading their feet by about a foot to a foot and a half, and practicing their swing so that they’d acquire a feel of how the golf ball will break. This is done regardless of the distance the putt needs to build a routine that will aid them find their sweet spot.

Perfecting your putt is an important portion of golfing success. It is an aspect of the sport that should never be left behind.

What clubs should a beginner in golf start to learn with. The woods or the irons.?

Which are more effective in a round of golf, woods or irons?

To start with, you should start with the short iron PW and moving progressively to longer ones, not exceeding 6 iron. Leave the long irons alone for now. For a couple of weeks, once you develop relatively consistent, smooth and rythmic swing, you’re ready to swing the longer irons and the woods.

Most mistakes made by beginners trying to learn golf, is that they take out the driver, and try to swing for the cheap seats, this will have long term negative effects to your golf game. First it may give you injury, second, you will train your body to make bad compensations, like manipulating your wrists, take away, scooping, etc. It took me a lot of effort to get out o f my bad habits that I picked up simply by swinging without proper instructions.

And take lessons.

Second answer, is irons. Having a good iron play + short game around the greens most of the time allows you to save par. 20 yards difference of your tee shot does not matter as much as 20 yards difference around the green. Around the green 20 yards can mean you’re in the bunker, or water.

how can I improve my golf game?

I have been playing for about 10 months (i know it is not that long of a time) but i have little to improvement from day 1. what can and what should i do. I love playing and I go on alot of business meetings/golf games for work. We close lots of deals on the golf course and it is embarrassing watching me play. please any advise will help

Hi I’m a golf professional and the main thing is patient. I know it’s a poor answer but it’s true. I started playing 12 years ago and I couldn’t hit the ball at all. Then I got hooked and loved it. Now it’s my career.

I see a lot of people who quit after a year or two but really they are just beginning. Set realistic goals, write them down and record your results.

Simplify. Get a lesson and take one or two really simple points and work on them every day. Practice swing in your back yard and go to the driving range. If you practice the right things for 2 hours a week it’s way more effective than practicing the wring things for 20 hours a week. Poor practice engraves bad habits!

The better you get at golf the more respect you’ll get with your clients so work on it and it will pay off some day. Hope I could help. Marcus,

Good Jokes…?

Instructions found on a golf course:
1. Back straight, knees bent, feet shoulder width apart.
2. Form a loose grip.
3. Keep your head down.
4. Avoid a quick back swing.
5. Stay out of the water.
6. Try not to hit anyone.
7. If you are taking too long, please let others go ahead of you.
8. Don’t stand directly in front of others.
9. Quiet please while others are preparing to go.
10. Don’t take extra strokes.
Very good. Now flush the urinal, go outside, and tee off.

The Joy of Jogging

1. For every mile you jog, you add one minute to your life. This enables you, at the age of 85, to spend an additional five months in a nursing home at $5,000/month.
2. The only reason I took up jogging was to hear heavy breathing again.
3. I joined a health club last year, spending $400 in the process. I haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.
4. I have to exercise early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I’m doing.
5. I like long walks, especially when they
are taken by people who annoy me.
6. The advantage to exercising every day is that you die healthier.
7. I have flabby thighs but fortunately my stomach covers them.
8. If you are going to take up cross-country skiing, it helps to start with a small country.
9. I don’t jog; it makes me spill my milk shake.
10. Actually, I don’t exercise at all. If we were meant to touch our toes, we would have them farther up on our body.
20 Laws of Golf
These laws were given to me by an old friend who carried has them around in his golf bag for, judging by the age of the paper (and his golf bag), decades. True golfers should understand the words laid out here.
LAW 1: No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eventually, a lifetime. LAW 2: Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about the former. LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. LAW 4: Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down. LAW 5: No matter what cause
causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant "You looked up," or invoke the wrath of the universe. LAW 6: The higher a golfer’s handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor. LAW 7: Every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater its desire. LAW 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man. LAW 9: Palm trees eat golf balls. LAW 10: Sand is alive. If it isn’t, how do you explain the way it works against you? LAW 11: Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse. LAW 12: A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent — or some similar combination. LAW 13: All 3-woods are demon-possessed. LAW 14: Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, pa
particularly out of bounds or into the water (see Law three) LAW 15: A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty. LAW 16: "Nice lag" can usually be translated to "lousy putt." Similarly, "tough break" can usually be translated "way to miss an easy one, sucker." LAW 17: The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you. LAW 18: The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be. LAW 19: Golf should be given up at least twice per month. LAW 20: All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset of the same day.

What are the best golf courses to play in the Atlanta area?

I’m a huge golfer and am visiting Atlanta to attend the final four in late march and early April of this year. I want to golf a couple of the best courses in the area. Price is no concern. Obviously it would be great to golf Augusta National but that is most likely impossible as it is a very private club. I would appreciate any suggestions, names, web sites, or links to the best courses in the area. Thank you for your time.

Go to Golfdigest.com and look up state-by-state rankings of courses. They do a great job of ranking courses and can give you much more information than we can do here. Try the following link, but if it doesn’t work, just search on Golf Digest.

Golf Swing – Hips, shoulders and hands are together, club is a split-second late. Help?

Novice golfer, taking lessons from a pro. I have a nice take-away, am keeping my back swing under control, and follow thru clean and high. BUT, my club reaches the ball a hair AFTER my hands.

PS Female golfer, 38 years old, about 15 lesson sessions in a month.

What kind of drill or training aid might help my club catch up to my hands?
To help clarify:
It seems to be true of all clubs — although I’ve been working with my 9-wood, 8-iron, and pitching wedge.

Although I’ve had lots of instruction time in a short period, I’ve not yet been on a course.

Its not a bad thing if you’re hitting the ball straight. If you are slicing the ball try and turn your right hand over your left hand a little more on the grip. This will make sure your club head is straight with the ball. Cures most slices.
